Liane Hurvitz
“When things are just right it truly is magic, it’s like a drug being behind the camera photographing this visual creation”
Intercru: Where are you from? Where do you live and work now?
Liane: Originally born in South Africa, I now live in Melbourne Australia.
I live and work from my humble abode. I work from home or wherever I may fall. I am so lucky that the industry allows me to have flexibility on where I can work. From amazing shoot locations to going to my local bar to do some retouching and getting into the creative mindset. I feel like I have traveled and explored most parts of my city.
How did you get started in photography?
I started straight out of school. Not knowing where, what, how. I went off to photographic college and never looked back. When you dive head first into something you’re passionate about, things fall into place.
I have always had a need to be creative and found that I fell in love with imagery. Working in photography does not only allow you to create imagery it also allows you to constantly be looking at beautiful photographs all the time.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
Not one thing but everything! Music, design, clothing, art, furniture, but of course imagery.
All your typical masters of photography are of course the driving force of inspiration as their work is absolutely brilliantly curated but also the ability to hop online and see so many amazing commercial and fashion photographers from all around the world. It’s so important to nurture your creative soul. I live for it and love it. I ensure my living situation is surrounded and indulged with my creative flare.
It’s nourishing to look at things that make you happy each day. Not from a materialist position but from a place of driving your creative energy to get you ticking to get you excited to always be creating.
How would you define your creative style?
My work can be bold and tonal. I would like to think I have an instinctive stamp on my work. I always strive to use color, light, and composition in a really interesting way. I want my work to feel a little surreal yet polished. I want people to say “how did she create that image?”
What is your favorite thing about fashion photography and portraits?
I have always loved and worked in fashion, retail being my first job at 15. I adore its beauty. I love that through all elements coming together you create magic, you get transported into an unreal world of ultimate magnificence and beauty through the model, clothing, makeup, and location.
When things are just right it truly is magic, it’s like a drug being behind the camera photographing this visual creation. I also love the communal element of it. It really takes a team, a community often of close friends filled with stylists and makeup artists to make visions come to life. Therefore the day is filled with great conversations, laughter and light especially when it’s personal work.
What types of emotions and themes do you try to convey in your work?
Femininity, female beauty, elegance, and empowerment . I have always loved the female form.
