Cayetano González
“I think inspiration is all around us. It’s your mind that has to be open and curious enough to see it.”
Intercru: Where are you from?
Cayetano: I’m from Valencia, Spain
Where do you live and work now?
I’m based in Barcelona, but I work worldwide.
What got you started as a photographer and director?
I’ve always wanted to be a painter, like my grandfather. During high school, I had the opportunity to work on a short film for one of my courses. I will never forget the day I got that video camera. It felt so natural that I realized that that’s what I had to do in life. I really wanted to be a director. Photography was the shortest path I had to get there. I needed to paint with the camera.
If you had to choose one, do you see yourself as more of a photographer or a director?
I feel like things are more liquid. I just like to play and experiment with images and stories. I understand they’re different roles with different techniques, but I just see it the same way.
What is it that you love the most about natural light?
It’s not that I love it, but what I don’t like is to see how an image was lit or done. I prefer to see things in a more “naturalistic” way.
Everything is made up in this industry. We create dreams or imaginary worlds. When I dream, space and time are distorted, everything is messy, but the light is always natural.
What is your biggest inspiration?
I find inspiration from nature, film, paintings, photography…I think inspiration is all around us. It’s your mind that has to be open and curious enough to see it.
I can say I find inspiration in beauty, and for me, beauty has to be undiscovered, different, and special.
How would you describe your work?
That’s a hard question. My work is challenging and continuously evolving. Everything I do is for a reason, everything is thoughtful and precise. But in this control, there’s always room for freedom for the characters to express themselves.
There’s something very personal from every model or actor I worked with and I intend to keep it this way. It’s like merging my dream with someone else’s dream and creating a story from there. It’s beautiful.
