Satellite June
“When I got my first roll of film developed I knew: this is it. It felt like everything fell into place. This was my medium, this was my way to tell the world my story.”
Intercru: Where are you from? Where are you living/working now?
Satellite June: I’m from the Netherlands, that is also where I am currently living/working. I live in a city called Utrecht, it has beautiful canals, old buildings and lots of antique/vintage/second hand shops…a perfect place to stroll around and get inspired by your surroundings.
What got you started in photography?
The need to express myself. I used to be a fashion designer but couldn’t find a way to express myself through that. I started to experiment with different art forms, like illustration and jewelry making but it wasn’t for me. I got an analog camera from someone who wasn’t using it anymore so I decided to give it a try. When I got my first roll of film developed I knew: this is it. It felt like everything fell into place. This was my medium, this was my way to tell the world my story.
What is it you love most about being a photographer?
The capability of making a moment last. Shooting film also really helps me to slow down and really be in the moment. Last week I was organizing my pictures and I find it so amazing that whatever picture I took from the box tells a story. Immediately you get taken back to the moment it was taken and I love that. It’s a sort of magic power :-)
Who are some of your favorite photographers?
Francesca Woodman, Linda McCartney, Noémie Ottilia Szabo, Lisa Sorgini, and Martina Matencio.
Where do you find inspiration for your photos?
Literally everywhere. It can be a song or a feeling. I love watching movies for inspiration, old album covers from the 60’s and 70’s. I have this interior book from the 70’s that has some insane rooms and colors and I absolutely love that. Sometimes a certain smell can take me back to an old memory and all of a sudden my head is filled with a new idea :-)
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
To stay true to myself in my photography, not to change it so it can be more commercial etc. The right people will find my work over time.
