Frédéric Agius
“First and foremost, I am in love with the Mediterranean Sea. It’s an incredible artistic playground for me...”
Intercru: Where are you from? Where do you live and work now?
Frédéric: I am from the south of France and I live here right now. I am a nurse in a hospital at this time.
How did you first get into photography?
It was back in 2014, I was walking around at a flea market and I saw a canon AE1. It was my parent’s camera when I was a kid. At first, I just bought it as a decorative object for my room but one day a friend of mine offered me a black and white roll of film to try out. That was the beginning of my craze for film photography.
What drove you to get into taking underwater portraits?
I think that was because I wanted to try to catch that moment when people leave their natural environment to go into water. That moment really gives me something different.
It can be more mesmerizing and more authentic at the same time. But first and foremost, I am in love with the Mediterranean Sea. It’s an incredible artistic playground for me... a little bit dangerous sometimes but it’s so rewarding.
Do you prefer digital or film photography? Why?
Automatically without thinking I say film photography because of the grain and the creation process. It’s just more exciting. The moment when you discover the photographic result on the developed roll is pure magic.
What would be a dream photoshoot for you?
One day I hope to shoot underwater pics at the Silfra Fault in Iceland, it might be some of the clearest waters on earth. It must be incredible to shoot people like they are in zero gravity.
What do you do to find inspiration for your creative work?
I love watching movies, reading books, or using Pinterest but most of time I trust my abilities to find inspiration at a given moment.
I think that is one of the other reasons why I am in love with film. This opportunity to give me a chance to create something without total control.
What makes you truly happy?
Life!
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Becoming a nurse at 36 years old.
What is the best advice about photography you’ve ever received?
To have a camera with me at all times!
