Intercru: Where are you from?

My name is Sebas, I am 30 years old and I am from Málaga. More specifically,  I’m from Fuengirola, a coastal city that has everything you could ask for, even though I haven’t been able to take full advantage of the town.

Where do you live and work now?

I have lived in Madrid for almost 7 years. I came here to look for work; it is a pity that almost 99% of the audiovisual work in this country is concentrated in Madrid and Barcelona. There are very good people outside these cities who cannot grow because they cannot move.

But Madrid welcomed me with open arms and I have met some great people and professionals here like Dewerf or Caf, stylists like Rebecca Perle, or brands like Lefrik or Pompeii who trusted me to make their brand image.

How did you start as a photographer?

I started when I was 18 years old. I decided to finish high school and study artistic photography, an experience that would change my perception of photography a lot. I began to meet artists

through Flickr and I wanted to do what they did.

Making a living from artistic photography is difficult, so when I moved to Madrid I started doing more commercial work for clothing brands and others.

What do you do to find creative inspiration?

I think that inspiration can appear in anything. I suppose that in recent years we are subjected to a constant bombardment of images due to living with social networks every single day.

But I try to find inspiration in art and movies. Cinema has inspired me a lot and other artists, such as Brooke Shaden, Alex Stoddart, or more recently Theo Gosselin or Spanish photographers such as Pablo Curto.

What are the types of emotions that you try to convey in your photos?

I suppose that my own way of being is as a quite melancholic person. In my most personal work I think I always try to capture that feeling. It is difficult for me to capture joy if it is not for someone’s work- happiness sells more and many brands ask me “Let them come out smiling!” so in my professional work I usually convey joy or confidence.

What is your favorite part of photography?

My favorite part of photography is when I see a photo in the camera that I know fulfills me and it’s not just another photo to use. The “problem” with digital photography is that we take 1000 photos and from there 10 are good. We take too many photos, and like 99% of the artists I am a tough critic of my own work, but when I see that there is 1 photo on the camera screen that I like, I always smile.
