Alejandro Laurel
“Every roll you shoot will be your teacher”
Intercru: Where are you from? Where are you living/working now?
Alejandro: I was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. I moved to Austin for college and then to LA, where I’ve now lived for a little over two years.
What got you into photography?
Some of the first friends I made after moving to LA were in the model/photography space and it definitely sparked an interest and curiosity for that world.
It’s one thing to know that world exists...But it’s another to see your friends in it. It makes it feel more tangible, like a realistic, attainable option. You forget that sometimes, coming from a small town. Entering an environment where I could see all the things I grew up thinking were unrealistic be the norm served as reassurance that making a living as an artist was really achievable.
What was the first camera you ever had?
In February 2020, I went on eBay and bought a Canon AE-1 Program for $150. It’s the same and only camera I use to date.
What are some of your favorite accounts to follow on Instagram?
Where do you find inspiration for your photography?
I find inspiration in music, films, and all things classic. I can honestly say my work is more influenced by musicians and film directors than actual photographers.
What’s the best piece of advice you would give an aspiring photographer?
Don’t worry about not knowing what you’re doing in the beginning. Just shoot, and keep shooting. As an artist, you are a work-in-progress. Every roll you shoot will be your teacher.
