Nick Prideaux
“I shoot all my work on film. For me it’s about staying in the moment and remaining present; I can’t do that when I look at the back of a screen.”
Intercru: Where are you from?
Nick: I’m from a small town on the east coast of Australia called Byron Bay.
Where do you live and work now?
I’m a full-time photographer currently based in Paris, France.
How did you get started in photography?
I took photography classes in high school and was always interested in visual arts growing up.
I studied film and screenwriting in university but was taking photos in my free time just as a hobby. When I moved to Tokyo in 2012 I started to take photos as a kind of visual diary and began sharing them on Tumblr and Instagram. From that point, it’s when I decided to try and make a career from it.
Where do you find creative inspiration?
It comes from a few places but mostly by looking at photo books and watching films. I try and remain curious and look for inspiration in all things though.
What is your favorite part about photography?
I think there’s a wonderful feeling when you manage to capture an image that just feels “right.” Everything that’s in the frame feels pure and sits within you nicely- that’s something that always resonates with me.
What would your dream photoshoot be like?
Some deserted beach in an exotic location with someone I love and a few rolls of film.
In 3 words, how would you describe your work?
Soft, ethereal, delicate.
What really makes you happy?
Swimming at the beach and good food with good friends.
Do you prefer shooting digital or analog? Why?
I shoot all my work on film. For me it’s about staying in the moment and remaining present; I can’t do that when I look at the back of a screen.
Who knows you the best?
My partner Matilda and my pet hedgehog Marcel.
What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been to?
Watching the sunset on Koh Lipe in Thailand was certainly one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Believe in your abilities, be brave, and be strong.
