Intercru: Where are you from?

Hi, my name is Marjolein but most people call me Marj. I’m a 29 year old from The Netherlands.

Where do you live and work now?

I live in Amsterdam and work as a freelance photographer and filmmaker. A lot of my work is in Amsterdam but most of the time it is all over The Netherlands.

How did you get started as a photographer?

I have been taking pictures for as long as I can remember. Even when I was little I always used to carry around a camera whenever I was on holiday with my family or when there was an event or a birthday party.

When I became older I went to a lot of concerts and festivals and it really got me into photography. Then I started traveling around Europe a lot and I took my camera everywhere I went.

A few years later I was lucky enough to make it my full time job in addition to creating video content.

What do you do to find creative inspiration?

I love browsing through Instagram or Twitter to meet fellow creators. I love chatting to other photographers and learning about their style. I think it’s very inspiring to see how other photographers do their work.

I’ve always loved traveling to different places to find new inspiration. As soon as this pandemic is over and we are able to travel again, I will definitely book a trip as soon as possible.

In 2019 I went to San Francisco, Las Vegas, and LA and met up with a lot of models to create new stuff. It was super inspiring and also gave me new ideas to test out when I was back in Amsterdam again.

What are the types of emotions you try to convey in your photos?

All types of emotions actually. The main thing I want to do is capture people in the same way as they see themselves (and hopefully even better haha). That is why I love to do different types of photography as well. Sometimes I shoot digital and another day I will shoot on film. It all depends on the mood and vibes I get from that person.

What’s your favorite part about photography?

Meeting new people, whether it’s models or make-up artists or stylists. I always love chatting to everyone and hearing their stories and ideas. I love working together with a small team to create the most awesome photos.
