Jose Clavijo
“I’ve always been interested in the arts in general. As a little kid I grew up in a very artistic environment.”
Intercru: Where are you from? Where do you live/work now?
Jose: I’m from Punta del Este, Uruguay, but I’ve been based in Sydney, Australia since 2016. I’ve lived in California, Rio de Janeiro, and some other places in between
How did you first get into photography?
I’ve always been interested in the arts in general. As a little kid I grew up in a very artistic environment.
I fell in love with film photography around 2015, after getting a Russian 35 mm vintage camera from a flea market in Rio.
What is the most important thing you do to get the perfect photo?
I think about the vibe and try to transmit a feeling/emotion with the image. Of course, the basics like light, composition, and location are important as well.
Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Literally everywhere... from nature to independent films, to other photographers and videographers, old books and magazines amongst many others.
What’s your favorite part about photography and going on photoshoots?
The styling has always been my favorite part. I love thinking about the scene I want to create, colors, elements, and aesthetics in general.
What’s the best advice you’ve received about photography?
Mmmmm, probably to be selective, and not be afraid to say no to work that doesn’t represent your style.
