Katja Heinemann
Recently, Intercru spoke with talented photographer Katja Heinemann about her work. Here is her story about her career and inspirations in her own words.
The beginning of her passion for photography
I grew up in Dresden, Germany. I moved to Leipzig, Germany three years ago. I still live here in order to finish my Bachelor in Culture and Media Education.
I used to steal the old camera from my dad when I was younger (don’t tell him please). Since I went to a sports school, there was little time for other things besides training. But I loved trying out new things, especially self-portraits. That is why I started to miss training and work on my photography skills.
After school I travelled all across the world to New Zealand and this is where I fully discovered the magic of photography. I wanted to capture the beautiful nature down there and I combined it with my self-portraits.
After a year I was back in Germany and I finally dared to ask other people for a shoot. And this is where it all started.
On finding inspiration in all aspects of life
I find inspiration simply everywhere. The funny thing is that my photography improved a lot- but I still have the same answer to this question like years ago. Whether it’s something that is going on in my life and worries me, or it’s something while I travel and find myself looking at beautiful nature. Sometimes inspiration comes from deep talks with my friends or even from the models I work with.
The emotions her photographs capture
I always try to capture interpersonal relationships. But at the same time I like to show abstract bodies, almost like objects. I always find myself working with confident people and that is also the message my pictures should send. Be confident. Try to be nice to yourself. Don’t hate yourself for not having the perfect body, because a perfect body does not exist. It’s just a thing the fashion industry tries to sell to us. And I want to break this perfect body images by showing different kind of strong and confident humans.
How the best part of photography is the relationships you build
Photography means meeting new and interesting people almost every day. I like exchanging thoughts and that is also the basis for my pictures.
Almost all of the models became close friends and I think that is something you can see in my photographs. A deeper human connection with trust and honesty.
