Intercru: Where are you from?

Jon: I was born and raised in Laguna Beach, California.

Where do you live and work now?

I’m currently residing in Laguna Niguel, California which is only a few short minutes away from Laguna Beach. As a freelance photographer, I’m constantly on call to go anywhere, but most of my shoots are in LA, San Diego, and Orange County.

What inspired you to become a photographer?

When I was in high school, my grandfather decided to give me all of his original Nikon camera gear. He served in the Navy, and while he was stationed in Japan, he ended up purchasing multiple cameras, lenses, filters, and much more.

When I received all of the gear, I couldn’t have been more excited to use it. To this day, his Nikon FM2 is my go to camera when I shoot film.

Do you prefer shooting film or digital better? Why?

I would have to choose film on this one. When shooting film, you have to think about the process of taking a photograph. It’s too easy to point and click a digital camera these days, so sometimes having a bit of a challenge makes the results more satisfying.

What’s the best part about being a photographer?

Connecting with people and being able to create meaningful images together. Whether it’s getting to know the subject and where they came from, the creative director at a brand and what they are trying to accomplish with our shoot, or if I’m simply capturing a moment with a friend. I love the process of speaking and photographing with people.

What’s the best advice about photography that you’ve ever gotten?

Don’t get too comfortable. It’s crucial to keep exploring different artists and new styles of photography so you can incorporate those into your own work.
