Nathan Chagall

This week Intercru spoke with photographer Nathan Chagall about his work, inspirations, and his love of cult classic movies

Intercru: How long have you been taking pictures and what made you start?

Nathan: I really got started about 4 years ago, when I bought a Sony a6000 with a fast 35mm prime lens for a Bali holiday. In the beginning the focus was on landscape and travel documentation photography. Since then, I’ve mainly focused on lifestyle and people, more precisely, exciting and classy women.

Who are some of your biggest creative influences and inspirations?

It is always changing, hand in hand with the ideas which get more and more precise in my head. In the beginning I was inspired by the “German Roamers” and Josselin. Since that time I’ve taken a lot of inspiration and mood out of the work from Cameron Hammond, Tom Mitchell, Kolja Eckert, Alessio Albi, Brydie Mack, and Ruslan Pelykh.

What are some of the most important things you've learned while being a photographer?

What you always learn, and what you never stop learning, is to compose a picture in your head and then to transfer it into the given situation. Mood counts more than technical implementation.

How would you describe your style as a photographer?

It is difficult for me to describe my style, because in my eyes it is constantly evolving. But the idea behind it often remains the same. With my photos I want to trigger a melancholic desire for this moment in the viewer. The women in the photos should radiate a connection but at the same time an inaccessibility.

Can you tell us more about the photos you chose?

All my favorite photos are the result of an unplanned event and are hardly ever staged.  It's the feeling and the mood that you can't capture in a short shooting, but only with patience, time, trust, and a certain kind of affection.

Time for some rapid fire questions: Favorite food?

Lasagna and sushi.

Greatest movies of all time?

Drive, Snatch, The Matrix, Gone Girl, and Fight Club.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you pick?

Too many destinations are on the bucket list, but I have never been to South America.

Best memory from a photoshoot?

A shoot with an old-timer in Cape Town when there was a thunderstorm and after that the whole sky looked like it was burning.

What types of music are you listening to right now?

I am listening to different types of music like electronic music, French coffee music, old school Hip Hop, and oldies.
